Mulled Wine – German Glühwein

We miss the Christmas Markets this year (2020). We miss meeting friends there, the smell or caramelized Almonds and the Glühwein (German mulled wine). This year we are bringing some Christmas market feeling for Home. This weekend I was working on a few new recipes for Christmas Market favourites.

The Glühwein is the steaming hot mug of spiced red or white wine. It is part of the pre-Christmas winter festivities that start around 5 weeks before Christmas.

The positive past of making mulled wine at home is that I can choose high quality that I like and add as much or less sweetener as I like.

How to make this tasty mulled wine step by step

Mulled Wine - German Glühwein

Glühwein or German mulled wine is always sold at Germany’s famous Christmas markets. This amazingly delicious warming drink is full of flavour, and aroma and you can easily make at home. Just bring the Christmas market spirit to your home.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 10 minutes
Servings 4 Mugs

Ingredients

  • 1 Bottle red wine dry or semi-dry
  • 4 whole Cloves
  • 2 sticks cinnamon
  • 1 Star anise (optional)
  • 1 pod Cardamom (optional)
  • 3 spoons raw sugar or more according to your taste
  • 1 whole Bio orange sliced

Instructions

  • Warm up the wine in a pot on a medium heat. Keep in mind that the wine should NOT cook. Otherwise, the alcohol will evaporate and the wine will lose its quality.
  • Add all the other ingredients. If you want you can use Bio Lemons or Apples.
  • Take the pot off the heat and let it rest for one hour. In this time the wine will absorb the flavour and the scent out of the spices.
  • Warm up the mulled wine to the preferred temperature before serving and filter through a sieve.
